I took this picture during the August 2006 Monterey Historic Auto Races. I used Pshop to eliminate part of another racecar from the top right corner.

Thanks to DA Member KoctaS for help in identifying this car. This is from the 1969 season driven by Jacky Ickx. It is a Brabham-Cosworth BT26. I just thought it looked so cool sitting in a garage in the Paddock Area of Laguna Seca.

That's a very nice pic of the Brabham BT26. The one thing to note about the current pic versus the car back in 1969 is with the tires. Those treadless tires nowadays did not exist in 1969. Back in its day, the Formula 1 cars of the 1960's still had tread on its tires.

The one outstanding quality I loved about the open wheel race cars of the 1960's were the unique body styles. The car designers and builders back then had a sense of style and individuality when it came to the nose cone piece of their race cars. In the 1960's it was easy to tell the difference between a Lotus 49, a McLaren M7A, a BRM, or a Brabham. Ole Jack, back in the day, used that rakish style nose cone for a couple of years.

Another aspect I enjoyed about Formula 1 racing back in the 1960's was that the cars were of primitive designs where the skills of the driver could somewhat compensate with a car's handling issues. Unlike nowadays where if a F1 car has an adjustment screw off by an eighth-of-an-inch, the car/driver combo is totally uncompetitive.

The lack of ground-effects with cars of that era also meant "wheel-to-wheel" racing, unlike nowadays where cars maintain a distance space buffer between each other, and race position gains or loses comes from pit stops.

It's not a Lotus, because it's a Brabham! :)

(Why I'm being russian know your foreign racing cars better than you all? Nobody see that's a Brabham, but many speaks about racing lol.)

Oh damn, what a shot! I really don't know much of the GP cars of the 60's, but yeah, that's a beauty for sure.

The men that drove those had balls and nerves of steel with a certain amount of self-preservation. I think any of the "kids"- the guys in their early 20's- in F1 today were driving that, they get killed for sure.

Just the thought of how fast they went in these and on what quality tracks gives me shivers.

And the fact that Sir Jacky is still among us ... You can't help but have the deepest respect for those guys.

I totally agree, and not just the F1 racers. Even the NASCAR racers were pretty insane back in the aero days of 1969/70/71 when the 426 Hemi Daytonas and Superbirds and the 429 Talladega Mercurys could reach over 200 mph. And, back then they had virtually no safety equipment other than a helmet and a crude seat belt. Back then if they had a high speed crash they most likely died unlike today when racers routinely walk away from horendous looking crashes.

Indeed, safety goes a long way nowadays. And it better, else the racing sport would have had to call it quits a long time ago.
